I heard that the bus service is best avoided, and would like to stop at a few places along the way e.g.Manakamana. So in theory, getting someone to drive us there, and then flying back to Kathmandu, seems to be a good option. Time is short and we will only be in the country for 1 week. Where do I find such a driver for a full day trip, and how much would it cost me? Or is there another solution?
Also, would 1 day be enough in Pokhara? I am obviously not planning to trek, just want to do some sightseeing, take in some mountain views, and get a feel for the atmosphere in the country...

Hi Dizzy Girl,
I never had a problem with the bus service. It can take 5 + hours from KTM to Pokhara. Greenlines is better tourist bus, and costs about 15-17USD and includes a nice meal. Any local hotel, or tour agency will book you a ticket.
However if time is your issue, you might want to take a 100 USD flight to and from KTM to Pokhara. With any luck you might get some nice mountain scenery. If not a microlite flight in Pokhara around the mountains will get you stunning vistas for about $120, but its a short trip. Like wise in KTM you can get a plane trip to take you Everest spotting.
For a weeks visit keep KTM for temples, history etc. Head to Pokhara for mountain vistas, lakes and shopping.
You might find this blog helpful www.thelongestwayhome.com
You will have no problem getting someone willing to drive you between KTM and Pokhara, stopping off at many places along the way. Prices will vary, so when you%26#39;re spending your first day in KTM just get rough prices from the many many touts that will come up to you. Or better yet get a rough price from your hotel, and then go into one or two agents and book, once you know the price.
Hope this helps
Dave
