Hayley:

There is rail service between Lhasa and Beijing. You can travel either by road or by air between Kathmandu and Lhasa - there is no rail. You will need to get a Tibet travel permit in Kathmandu prior to traveling to Lhasa. There are several agencies in Kathmandu that can make arrangements. You might spend some time reviewing this and the Tibet forums where all aspects of such a trip are discussed. There are others that can give you advice on how to access the train from Lhasa to Beijing. An around the world trip sounds like a lot of fun. Hope it works out for you. I noted on the BBC website that Derby has been promoted!!

Hi,

I too am wanting to possibly travel from Kathmandu to Beijing. Have you found a way of doing it??

If you just want to reach Beijing by air, then it is easier to travel to Guanzhou, Chengdu or Hongkong from Kathmandu and then catch a connecting flight to Beijing. It will be easier than traveling via Lhasa where you need a separate travel permit besides Chinese visa.

The link below might be of some help in telling about the airlines, the contact address and the frequency of flights from Kathmandu to those destinations.
