visit to kathmandu march/april 2009

Dear Tekkesr,

Yes this time will be not that much cold. Beter to have sleeping bags, Sun Glass, Creams, and daily needed things 4 Copies of P.P. Photos for trekking Permit.

when to go?? please help

Hi,

The only time I have open to go to Nepal is late June to early Aug. Is this the worst time possaible to visit. Will the weather be a nightmare?

I was hoping to do the trecks and I heard they can be closed at this time

Any advice would be great thanks

when to go?? please help

Dear Neapl Lovers,

To visit the Nepal always good i dont think worst. But, TO do normal trekking in nepal this time is not that much good because of bad weather. Must of time cloudy and rain. But there are soem area which is very good for trekking this time. Loke Mustang there are not much monsoon weather is good and dry or Dolpa also good but the cost is quite expensive.

when to go?? please help

It is the start of the monsoon season and there will be rain. But it does not mean that it will rain all the time. You might be able to enjoy the scenery around. The treks won%26#39;t be closed but it is not the ideal time to trek (off season)

As the previous poster suggested, trekking in the rain shadow areas like Upper Mustang and Dolpo receive less rain and you might want to try those trekking areas. But the costs would be a bit higher as they require trekking permits. You can try the Jomsom trek, Langtang and Helambu treks as well. These three treks do not need trekking permits.

Can I keep my hiking pole in my hand carry on luggage?

I will have my hiking pole inside my hand carry on luggage.I do not have any check in luggages. Is this a problem when departing from JFK airport to Nepal and also when coming back to US? Will the TSA confiscate my pole?

Much appreciated.

Can I keep my hiking pole in my hand carry on luggage?

Hi,

I hope no but better if you put separately in your luggage if necessary you can see them easily.

Cheers

Can I keep my hiking pole in my hand carry on luggage?

I am sure you will not be allowed to take it as carry on. However, you will be able to buy one in KTM very cheaply.

If purchased in Kat, could I transport it via Yeti Air with me to Pokhara?

Alternately, can the poles be purchased in Pokhara?

I am starting the Jomsom Trek 28 Mar.

The TSA%26#39;s official list of prohibited items is here: tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permi…

They don%26#39;t specifically mention hiking poles, but ski poles are banned as carry-ons. My guess would be that a collapsable, rubber-tipped hiking pole would be OK in your carry-on luggage, but if it%26#39;s full-sized, non-collapsing or has a pointy end it%26#39;s not OK.

Things you wish you had known!

Has anyone got any advise, things you wish you had known, things to see, things to take....

Also has anyone any experience of Manakamana Treks %26amp; Expedition?

Hoping to book the base camp trek in July and would welcome posts from anyone who has had any expereince.

Many thanks!

Things you wish you had known!

wow, could write a lot here

very much an advocate for slowing down, spending more time learning the culture and talking to the villagers. Eating more diverse food, not taking so much stuff in my backpack(clothes)Go more slowly in terms of days up when ascending to high altitudes ( over 16,000 ft) Always hire a local guide, even in Ktm., so cheap and so valuable to a greater experience. Buy more thankas, buy a silk rug but chose what I want and then have my guide negotiate for the price. Hire local, so the money goes straight to the families and not a rich agency.

Things you wish you had known!

Swiss army knife, torch light (flash light), sunglasses, wind and water proof jacket, toiletries, towel and soap, first aid kit, few spare batteries (small and large both), camera – (films if you are not using a digital camera), two liter mineral water bottle, a cigarette lighter, warm clothing are some of the things that you should take while trekking to the base camp.

Trekking - how much a day?

Hi

We have arranged a trek to Langtang Valley with a local company. We are staying in teahouses, and all of our meals and drinks are included. How many rupees a day will we need for any extras?

Sandra

Trekking - how much a day?

Depends on what extras you will be taking on the way. If you are taking beer, then may be around Rs. 1000 will be enough. If not, then may Rs 500 should be okay.

I suppose your accommodation have also been taken care of.

Trekking - how much a day?

Sandra,

We can guess that you are in holiday so you want to enjoy and fun so better if you take 1000-1500 NPR.

Exoticbuddha is right but it will be better for you.

Cheers

1500 NPR per person per day sounds like quite a lot.. What type of things would we be spending our money on?

  • How safe is nepal with present political scenario?

With the current political scenario and protests is it safe to visit Nepal in May-June? Would it be the right month too to travel?

How safe is nepal with present political scenario?

Tourists have not been harmed when they follow sensible safety procedures.

There are political fighting going on but they have not harmed the tourists and their activities. Based on the facts available at the moment, I would advise you to keep the plan to visit Nepal in May - June. However, be informed about the security and political happenings from news sites and from these types of forums and blogs.

How safe is nepal with present political scenario?

    Hi,

Definately it has some political activities with political parties but never harless for tourist, you can visit easily and more safety.

it will be the best time to travel in Nepal.

    Chitwan or Bardia?

Hi, I am planning to go to Nepal in April. I am very keen to see the Royal Bengal Tigers. Can I know what are the chances of one being able to spot one? Would you recommend Chitwan or Bardia? I heard that one has a better chance of spotting tigers in Bardia. Also, does anyone know what%26#39;s the approximate costs for 3D/2N package at either of these national parks? Many thanks.

    Chitwan or Bardia?

    Hello,

If you are willing to see Bengal Tigers,it will be better in Bardiya.

You can find in Chitwan but better in Bardiya.

The cost will depend on what category of hotel you want to stay.

If you will be willing to get price of 2N/3D you can contact,http://www.omegatreks.com

Wondering about safety for travellers in Kathmandu and Nepal. We are booked to arrive early June for 2 weeks and plan to tour with a private guide. We have been watching the unrest on the news.

    Hi

I know its not the same as an update from nepal. but it can be worth looking at our govt website www.fco.gov.uk which has a travellers advice section that they keep updated very regularly with the latest developments. This is what all UK travel companies base their decisions to pull trips (or not) on.

Currently, it is not safe for tourists. It is wise to delay or even cancel your trip unless there is complete a stop of the violence.

Well, now it is safe to travel in Nepal. Get in touch with the locals to know more... yeah it is true you can travel without worries.

Doodstar you should be fine visiting in June, unless there is a return to the type of violence and unrest there was for the last 3 weeks. Which is not very likely.

I join all Nepalis in wishing for peace and progress now forward in Nepal- the most gorgeous country.

also , I don%26#39;t reccomend putting too much weight on Travel Advisories issued by Govts. They are usually unfair and not a real reflection of whats happening on the ground.

I arrived in Kathmandu on the 26th of March before the tranportation/curfew was set. I then hiked to base camp and returned back to the city on the 11th of April when the curfew and the trasportation strike was occuring. Yes, it was a little difficult to find a ride back to the hotel from the airport, but they had taxi%26#39;s set apart for the use of ';tourists only'; There were no one on the streets except for guards which will not hurt the tourists. They love tourists....we even played frisbee with a truck full of guards. Just be careful and don%26#39;t be stupid. Their economy rely%26#39;s on the tourists. We came across a riot and they all stopped and waved as us. They love you! I think you will be perfectly fine and safe.

I hope to be going to Kathmandu in October.I have never been before but have always wanted to go.---So:

    1. Is October a good time to go ?

    2. Is Kathmandu the best place to base myself?

    3. What other Cities/Towns/Places would you suggest I go?.

I will only have 2 weeks remember.

    4. Any tried and tested Hotels anyone?

Anyhow I would be grateful for information regards the above.

Pushpa---love the name---maybe I can contact you direct?. I see you left your e--mail address.

    Thanks again.

And failing obtaining a Guide. How safe is it to go it alone?????

I also would like to get some sort of rough idea of the weather conditions in early June?????

    Many thanks.

    Oliver.

    Guides/ June.

You hang on Thamel Kathmandu. There is bunch of trekking office and you will get responsible guide.

    Guides/ June.

    Dear Oliver,

Obviously the best place to find guide is Thamel but it will be hanged by many street people.

You can do alone without guide but in our experience whows it will be not good idea.

Normally early June is good time it depends on how the weather is.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Ya,I also belive Thamel is best places to hire guide but lot of crazy and terrible people in the street,be careful about it.

I don%26#39;t think so without guide is good idea for trek.

I am also planning such treks of Nepal in oct/Nov,some one recommend me directly hire local good it will be less expensive than agency.

So if you want you can contact him at deumangh@yahoo.com.

Questions by first timers in Kathmandu

My friends are going to Kathmandu for a seminar early next month and will have an extra day for sightseeing. They are on their 20%26#39;s. What places do you suggest they visit, the weather there now, and what are the must buys? Would appreciate your inputs...

Questions by first timers in Kathmandu

My %26#39;not to be missed%26#39; sights are:

Boudnath Stupa (go late afternoon/early evening)

    Garden of Dreams

    A wander around Thamel

    Pashputinath Temple

That would easily fill up a day. Most people would suggest Swayambunath (Monkey Temple) but I really do not like it there. The monkeys can be aggressive too.

    Have a great time!

Questions by first timers in Kathmandu

I would add the beautiful Durbar square with all the different temples and palaces, just sit and look around.

If have time extra a day visit Patan and Bhadgaon

    that is cool

Thanks guys for your suggestions! Any must buy itiem/souvenir from Nepal?

yes tons of gorgeous souvenirs... wander around Thamel or Patan Square (in my opinion far more grand than Darbar sq) and you%26#39;ll encounter many shops selling wonderful items

These posts were from last year....I am eager to hear how your trip went....any suggestions for novice travelers, as myself?

I just came back from Kathmandu. If you%26#39;re going there, pls bring a few torchlights. They are having a 16-hour load-shedding, this means only 8 hours of electricity a day. And the timing can vary, the electricity just go off, even in the middle of the night. In the nights, the rooms can be very cold, I had to wear 3 layers of sweaters to sleep !

    Drive time Pokhara to Sauhara

We%26#39;re off to Nepal next month and was pndering whether to fly from Pokhara to Chitwan via Kathmandu or drive direct from Pokhara to Chitwan, espcially as I should imagine the scenery would be beautiful. I%26#39;ve been given a number of different drive times and wondered if anyone had done the journey. I%26#39;ve been told anythning from 1.5 hours (dubious looking at the map) to 5 hours.

    Many thanks

    Sam

    Drive time Pokhara to Sauhara

It takes around 4 to 5 hours to travel from Pokhara to Chitwan. I think it makes sense to drive directly from Pokhara to Chitwan as it takes less time and costs less.

If you do not like to use the public transport, you can try out renting a car, taxi and go directly. It costs a bit more than the public transport but you will have your say how you would like to make your journey.

    buses from kathmandu to pokhara

What would be the most reliable and fast bus line to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back . Where can one catch this bus ? thanks

    buses from kathmandu to pokhara

How long does the tourist bus take from Kathmandu to Pokhara? How much is it please?

    buses from kathmandu to pokhara

Just got back yesterday from Nepal, and trekking Gorepani and Poon Hill. I would personally not recommend the local buses. They looked way scary. We hooked up with a guide who arranged a private van for us, with air conditioning, and I felt fine in that. The road from KTM to Pokhara is the biggest highway in Nepal, and I was totally shocked!!! I thought we were on a back roads little mountain trail or something!! There were broken down buses all up and down the road, some of them run off the road into the gutters (huge gutters with this raging HUGE river on the other side). The buses were jam packed with sweating people. No way would I have wanted to been on it. FYI. Also, on the way back to KTm from Pokhara, we opted for a plane. It was fairly cheap - can%26#39;t remember exactly but definitely under a hundred bucks, and took only 25 minutes. It was amazing to fly over the towns/villages, and also to fly above the clouds and see the mountains as well. Definitely worth it, because we were tired after our trek and wanted to get back to civilization (KTM), and did NOT want to do another 6 hour bus ride. . . .

    Hi,

How did you find a driver from kathmandu to pokara and how much did it cost?

Also, we would like to do a 2-3 day trek from Pokara, to see some good mountain scenery. Do you have a recommendation? Guide?

    Thanks

    Dear Kiran

There are more than 5 tourist bus kathamndu- pokhara- kathamndu . One is greenline bus which coust u $18 per person for one way %26amp; other normal tourist bus is couts around $5-7 per person. You may catch in kanthipath in 06:oo am - 07:30am .near thamel.

A car ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara costs around Rs. 7,000 (around 90 dollars) for one way trip and will cost an additional Rs. 1500 ($ 20) for overnight stay.

There are several car rental services that operate from Kathmandu. Clean Kantipur Vehicle (Phone 98510-79370; Shaymu Sapkota)is one of them and I generally use them for my trips outside Kathmandu when a car rental is required. The people in the company are very professional.

Greenline is the luxury bus service from KTM - PKR; leaves from it%26#39;s own office in Thamel (tourist area) not far from traffic lights at Kantipath opp Garden of Dreams around 7am/7.30am, includes free mineral water and free lunch (Nepali buffet) at Riverside Resort and arrives in Pokhara between 2-4pm - costs have increased lately, prob around USD18

There are many other tourist buses that are cheaper - Swiss Travels is a reliable one i have travelled on about 8 times now - cost about NPR600 one way. All the tourist buses leave from Kantipath (all lined up in front of each other as you walk down the line to find yours).

Any travel agent could also book you a seat on a tourist minivan at similar cost

Don%26#39;t use local buses for this route, they are not much cheaper than tourist buses, not safe or well maintained, take ages as they continually stop to pick up passengers and very overcrowded. You%26#39;ll find many Nepali%26#39;s also using the tourist bus for this reason.

If you want to try local bus, hop on one of the ones within Pokhara itself

    Pokhara – best time?

If you wanted to go to Pokhara to see and photo mountains (forget the trekking), when would you go?

If you had to choose between March and April, which would you choose?

    Pokhara %26ndash; best time?

I wanted to do the same. October November are the best times. After that the dust kicks up a little. But the higher you go, the less dust and the better the photos.

Without trekking you won%26#39;t get anything to great. Though you will pick up a few good vistas.

There%26#39;s not much difference between March and April. Both can have heavy cloud and rain. If they break, you%26#39;ll get a great shot. If not...

You can check out www.thelongestwayhome.com for some more info on Nepal.

    Hope this helps

    Dave

    Pokhara %26ndash; best time?

Agree with most of Dave%26#39;s comments, except that the view from Sanarkot, a relatively short taxi-ride away to the north of the city, is fantastic, offering a great panorama of the Annapurnas even to non-trekkers !

Thanks iamontheroad and Alanyeti. Your advice is pretty much what we feared. Looks like we%26#39;ll have to put it off till autumn.

We recognize we%26#39;d do better if we made a trek. But being oldish and lazy, we figure a taxi ride to Sarangkot will have to do the job.

    No problems.

In Pokhara if you can make it to the World Peace Stupa 45 mins uphill, you can also get a great panorama, weather pending. If all that fails. Then when there, and facing the lake. Turn right. Follow the trail and you will get to a cafe over looking the lake and Annapurna range. Rest up a while. Then keep going 15 minutes more, you%26#39;ll be in an area filled with colourful prayer flags that will make a great photo. I think you can see some on the link I gave above.

    Hope it works out!

    Dave

I read different things. Lonely planet says:

    ';From June to September the skies open and the views vanish behind blankets of grey cloud; bring a brolly and be prepared to wade when the streets are flooded.';

I believe March/April are dry, it will be spring time in the mountains. The rains will probably start around june...

We went to Pokhara for 3 days in April 2008 and were afforded many hours, each day, of fantastic views of the mountains, including a majestic sunrise at Sarangkot. There was cloud cover some of the time, and some rain, but not a big deal.

I plan to return April 2009.

My wife and I are also planning to visit Nepal early April, after a tour of the Golden Triangle in India. My dilemma right now is picking between 2 tour agencies, one which offers 4 days in Kathmandu and the other 2 days in Kat. and 2 days in Pokhara. The latter tour is considerably more expensive and I%26#39;m trying to determine if it%26#39;s worth the extra money. Any advice that would help me choose would be appreciated.

If you will be there at same time, contact me directly to exchange details (if interested).

    Bob

    Chicago IL

Personally, i would recommend seeing both, but it really depends what you want to see. Kathmandu is a big, bustling noisy city, full of temples (Hindu and Buddhist), historic sites (like the 3 Durbar Squares of old palaces), ancient buildings as well as more shopping opportunities (both old bazaars and newer department stores). The Buddhist temples are a bit out of the city and at Swayambunath you get a good view of the city and the mountains if weather is clear, but in April with haze and pollution probably not likely to see them from Kathmandu. From KTM you can travel an hour or two out to nagarkot or Dhulikhel to see sunrise over Himalayas, but I have been several times and never yet seen it in April (Oct and Nov are much clearer from KTM).

Pokhara is much smaller, cleaner, greener, quieter without a lot of temples or historic sites, but plenty of natural beauty. Tourist area is in Lakeside (a long road stretching along the lakefront of Phewa Tal filled with hotels, restaurants and shops), if weather is clear view of Himalayas from Pokhara is amazing and if you take a boat ride across the lake early on a clear morning or walk to the top of hill on other side of lake see Himalayan range reflected in water. from Pokhara you can walk to top of Sarangkot for a view over city, lake and mountains, paraglide from the top (or walk or take taxi down). There is a Tibetan refugee camp with monastery and Hindu temple at northern end of town, Devi%26#39;s falls and caves at south, Mountain Museum etc

the flight from KTM to PKR is only about 30 minutes and accomodation in PKR is plentiful with everything from budget to luxury resort. It would actually be quite easy to stay in KTM 2 days on the tour and arrange yourselves to go to PKR for 2 days - any travel agent in KTM could book return airfares and hotel accomodation for you.

  • Nepal law and currency

    Hello everyone

I am planning to work in Nepal (Kathmandu region) in July 2009 for a few months.

At present I am living in China and have a few questions to ask about currency.

How much money can I bring into Nepal? Are there restrictions?

Can I bring Chinese CNY currency and convert into Nepalese Rupees or is it better to have GBP or USD.

    Are ATM%26#39;s machines available?

Any advice would be appreciated and I hope to hear from anyone soon.

    Shand

    Nepal law and currency

    Shand,

Here is not any restrictions of CNY,either you can bring chinese currency,GBP,USD or credit cards.

You can find any where around Kathmandu ATM Machine.

    Good luck

    Nepal law and currency

There are no restrictions on currency, but ATMS and banks are plentiful in Kathmandu. i would advise you to bring a small amount of your own or USD currency in, then withdraw what you need from ATM when you get here - this would be wiser than carrying around large amounts of cash in KTM - there have been problems with foreigners being robbed of large cash amounts or mugged

    ATMs in Kathmandu & Bhaktapur

I%26#39;m a little concerned about the availability of ATMs (bank machines) due to the power cuts. Would it be wise to bring some extra cash (USD) and exchange it at my hotel? My tour package includes most of the essentials, so I won%26#39;t need a huge pile of cash.

    ATMs in Kathmandu %26amp; Bhaktapur

    Dear mesnan,

you don%26#39;t need to worried about this case. because in Kathmandu and bhaktapur many place you will get ATM machine.even you can chage $ anywhere in Thamel.ATM machine will be OK even power cut time also.

    ATMs in Kathmandu %26amp; Bhaktapur

There are ATMs in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur and you can draw money from them. And you are right about being concerned about the operation time of the machines. Bring some more cash as a backup but you will probably be able to get hold of the money from the ATMs.

There are plenty of ATM%26#39;s in Kathmandu, bhaktapur and pokhara as well now. Sometimes an ATM is not working (for various reasons, not just power cuts) but usually further down the road one will be working - and most work even during power cuts. a lot of businesses inc banks in KTM now have generators to cope with daily power cuts.

Thanks everyone for this useful advice. 2 more weeks before my trip!

    How long in Nepal

    Hi,

we want to go in about 1 week to Nepal, but we don%26#39;t know how much time we need in Nepal: is 1 month enough or would it be better to stay 2 months? Which kind of visa will be issued at the airport and what%26#39;s the fee?

    Thanks for any answer/suggestion!!!

    How long in Nepal

    Hithere,

Generally traveling to nepal won%26#39;t be enough for one or two because of wonderful place and historical cities.

In fact, it%26#39;s really nice country and once isnot enough, therefore try to stay two months and travel several plcaces around nepal.

Generally, nowadays visa system is pretty much changed than before like as if you wish to stay here for a month then you should spend US$ 45 which is multiple entry which will be issue at the upon arrival at kathmandu airport and if you feel to stay more then that(one to three month) then you should spend US$ 90 which is multiple entry.

Any way make your journey nice and if you like to have cup of tea or coffee please remember me.Thanks

    N.D

    How long in Nepal

    Hi,

It depends on your program schedule what program are you willing to do.

We can offer many different program,if you want to do all may be it will take more than 2 months.I hope long holidays will be boaring for all of you.

Better if you choose one of the treks among of them, some days of Jungle safari, some ningts in Nagarkot,Dhulkhel. If you do it will enough in one month.

In the airport you can get tourist visa,it will be from first 15 days to 90 days.

    Best of luck.

I think there seems to be some error in reporting the visa fees. The fees are mentioned below:

The fee for multiple entry visa (US$ 25, valid for 15 days) or ($40 for 30 days) or ($100 for 90 days) is payable in any major currency and is given to almost any traveler.

Side excursion from Thailand to Pohara in late June or early

We%26#39;ll be in Thailand for 2 wks at the of June and until the middle of July. We also plan to spend several days in Angkor Watt. Does it make sense to catch a plane to spend 2-3 days in Nepal? We were thinking of spending the time in Pokhara and catching a flight over Everest. Everyone on TA says it monsoon time- how much rain can we expect?

    Thanks for your time?

Is 2 to 32 days enough to spend in Nepal?

Side excursion from Thailand to Pohara in late June or early

2 to 3 days is not enough to spend in Nepal with all the variety that Nepal offers. But you can see a portion of what you can enjoy in Nepal.

I am afraid you might not be able to make the flight to Everest in late June. You might be lucky and make them in early June provided the monsoon starts a bit late. But if you want to take a flight to Everest and spend time in Pokhara, take the flight to Everest the next morning of your arrival and then head off to Pokhara. That would make things easier or you could take the mountain flight at the end of your trip - on the last morning of your stay here.

Side excursion from Thailand to Pohara in late June or early

    HI,

Yes the monsoon will start in June but if you will be lucky, you can flight over Everest.

Of course it offers many activities,I am also afraid it will be tight schedule in 2-3 days.

    Cheers,have a good travel

Thanks for the suggestions. What airlines fly from Bankok and/or from Angkor Wat to Pokhara? Are their any airlines that are more reasonable than others? We will either fly from BKK or Siem Reap and spend 3 days in Pokhara. Suggestions on things to do besides flying over Everest?

What companies fly from Pokhara to Everest- helicopters or planes?

You can not fly directly to Pokhara from Bangkok - you need to fly to Kathmandu, the only international airport in Nepal. From there you can take a domestic flight to Pokhara or drive 6 hours from Kathmandu.

From Bangkok to Kathmandu, Thai Airways and Nepal Airlines Corporation fly to Kathmandu. Nepal Airlines is relatively cheaper than Thai. There are other airlines (Biman Airlines, Jet Airways, Indian Airlines) that fly to other destinations and connect to Kathmandu.

There are sightseeing in Kathmandu valley - Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares. There are temples like Pashupatinath and stupas like Swayambhunath, Bodhnath. You can also visit Nagarkot to have a panoramic view of the mountains and lovely sunrise from there - provided the weather is good.

I have been reading a lot of posts and wondering if we should postpone the trip to Nepal because of bad weather in late June and July. Is the rain, flooding etc in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bhaktapur, Gorkha- the entire area or are there some places where we might find nice weather and if so where are they??? We wanted to go to Chitwan National Park but that looks like monsoons for sure. If we postpone it will probably be several years before we can do it again.

    visa extension

Does anyone know how the new visa regulations work? We will arrange for a visa for 30 days but need two more days. I know you pay 2 dollars for each extra day, but how is it done? Do we go to the air-port again or can it be done in advance?

    viking60

    visa extension

You need to go to immigration office (Phone: 01-4221996, open 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday; URL http://immi.gov.np) in Maitighar, Kathmandu or to the office in Pokhara to renew your visa. I think you need to pay US$ 25 to extend your visa for less than or equal to 15 days. The US$ 2 per day is for extending the visa for more than 15 days.

    visa extension

The opening hours and days should have been Sunday to Thursday - 1000 -1700 with 1600 during winter (November to January) and 1000-1500 on Friday.

  • Is 8 days enough in Nepal??

I am planning a trip at the end of the year for 5 weeks around Asia, I have pretty much planned the rest of my itinerary but was thinking of stopping by Nepal on the last leg of my trip. However, I%26#39;m unsure if 8 days is a decent length of time to get to explore the country, or is it better to spend a good 2-3 weeks there. Just wondering if anyone else had any thoughts, or could reccomend things for my trip?

    Thanks,

    DJB

Is 8 days enough in Nepal??

    DJB,

Its true that you can get lot of things to do in your holidays in Nepal but you can consider up on your time schedule.

If you can success to choose suitable spot in 8 days, you c an success to eplore the length of the Nepal in 8 days.

Better if you take short trek aprx 5/6 days,it will be helpful to explore this country.

    Best of luck.

Is 8 days enough in Nepal??

The time frame that you are mentioning about depends on what you want to do here. Are you interested in long treks, short treks, cultural experiences, sightseeing, adventure sports or something else? The time frame depends on your choice. If you can elaborate some more, you might get a better answer.

    Tea house trek

I%26#39;m doing the EBC trek in April and will be staying in tea houses the whole time. Can anyone tell me what kinds of food you get at these places, and the cost of a meal, especially after leaving Namche Bazzar.

    Thanks in advance

    Tea house trek

    Breakfast: cereals, porridge, eggs etc.

Lunch / dinner: Soups, fried rice, noodles, omlettes, momos, occasionally yak steak, chips

    Apple or banana pie

You%26#39;ll probably get by with breakfast at about $5, dinner $8 - 10.

Menus, and prices are standard and don%26#39;t change much. The main price changes as you go north seem to be in luxuries such as beer, coke, chocolate bars etc. where the price increases to reflect the addirional costs of getting the stuff there

    Kathmandu this weekend

    Hi everyone -

I am going to Kathmandu with a group of 4 people this weekend. We arrive Friday afternoon and come back Sunday afternoon. Does anyone have advice on must sees? Also, can you tell me how long the visa process at the airport takes? We will be taking PP photos and a completed form.

    Thanks in advance!

    BT

    Kathmandu this weekend

If you have completed forms, you might need to spend around half and hour for the visa process.

Try the mountain flight to the Everest in one of the morning through one of the private airlines - Buddha Air (http://buddhaair.com), Yeti Airlines (http://yetiairlines.com), Agni Air (http://www.agniair.com/).

Other things to see would be visiting the Durbar Square of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan. Visit Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhu and Bodhnath stupas in Kathmandu. If you have time, visit the hill top tourist town of Nagarkot for a overnight stay for panoramic view and early sunrise.

We wanna do the whole Annapurna Circuit in Oct/Nov '09

    He there....

We are 2 females who want to do the whole dang circuit next year. We are just starting our research and would appreciate suggestions of a tour company that would take us. We are not comfortable just hiring someone once we are there as we do not want to be responsible for them/their gear etc. Having said that, we would prefer not to go with a huge group of people either. We want to do the tea house trek for 17-22 days...whatever it takes.

Any suggestions? I have heard of Intrepid Tours but they seem a little pricey. Thoughts?

    Thank you fellow Trippers!

    Susie

We wanna do the whole Annapurna Circuit in Oct/Nov '09

I%26#39;ve used a firm called %26#39;Spirit of the Himalayas%26#39; several times. They are a Nepali-owned, Kathmandu-based company who specialise in tailor-made trips that provide exactly what you, as the customer, want. They recently organised a three week trek into the Langtang for two of us: I provided the itinerary, and they organised the whole thing - a camping trek with raft trip, and a bit of tourism, thrown in at the end: the service, at our request, included transfers from kathmandu airport, hotel in Ktm, trek, flight to Pokhara, hotel there, rafting trip, flight back, car to Nagarkot and hotel there, car to Bhaktapur and hotel, car back to Ktm, hotel, final transfer to airport, i.e. the whole package. They also insure and equip the trek staff. They will equally happily provide guide and porter for a tea-house trek (I feel it%26#39;s worth employing porter/porters as not carrying a big sack will add to the enjoyment of your trip - and creates employment !). Because the firm is based in Nepal it doesn%26#39;t have to carry the costs of western offices, advertising, etc.and so their prices are reasonable. It%26#39;s worth emailing them at nepshol@mos.com.np

We wanna do the whole Annapurna Circuit in Oct/Nov '09

That is awesome! You will have a great time!!! We just got back from doing the Poon Hill trek yesterday. My whole family of 7 went. We had a great experience I think largely due to the guide that we chose. We tried a few American companies and they were sooooo expensive. I also tried another Nepali company and felt that they were more interested in making a buck. I found Dil Subedi through another Trip Advisor member and was 1000% satisfied. He really took care of us down to the last detail. I was concerned a bit about my kids, but he really did a great job with us. He put a porter on my 10 year old (a guy named Prakash who had climbed Everest), and that made all the difference for my boy. I dont%26#39; think he%26#39;ll ever forget Prakash!! We ran into a couple of groups of europeans and some Japanese and Chinese trekkers who were with guides who were lost and they never even got them to Poon Hill!!! One British woman was only allowed dal bhat to eat (the Nepali set meal which is very good - the first couple days. . . .). Anyway, Dils%26#39; a Nepali who owns his trek company, does all the permits, etc, and conducts his own guiding. His email is dbsubedi@mail.com.np I was very pleased. If you have any questions, re: what to take, etc, what I WISH we took etc, let me know!!! Have a great time!

I have trekked three times in Nepal and the Annapurna Circuit is a great one. I don%26#39;t know if I am supposed to name certain outfits here, but I used the same guide and porter all three times and was very pleased. These trips were in 1999, 2000, %26amp; 2001. When first contacting the agency in Kathmandu we were told a higher price if they take care of all the food and lodging price themselves, but we opted just to pay for the guide / porter and pay the rest as we went and saved a bunch of dollars. When we were there the basic rooms in the teahouse trek came to about $2 for the two of us, and food was good and also cheap.

Since I do not know for sure the rules of naming a particular guide and agency on the forum, you can send me a personal message if you wish and I can respond that way.

Think you will really enjoy Nepal. I hear there is road construction going on the west side of the trek which was not there when I went, so don%26#39;t know how that will effect that portion. The village of Jharkot was a particular favorite of ours, and we also liked Manang where we hung out for almost two weeks and got to be there for a village festival.

    Tom.

    Susie,

My experience told you can contact info@omegatreks.com,good reliable company.

    best of luck

    John

The trekking agency in Kathmandu I was referring to is located on the internet at nepalvisiontreks.com you can write to Kumar and mention Tom or Jim Goldrup from California. Instead of their listed treks you can do your own independent trek with them for less money. Our guide%26#39;s name there is Jhalak Thapa. He was really great. This would be our recommendation based on three trips there in 1999, 2000 %26amp; 2001.

You can also check yetizone.com where folks post questions and answers about travel to Nepal.

    Hí,

It is a wonderfull trek. I did it last year.

I would recommend the himalayanabode.com agency.

They are very organized and do a very good job for me.

I wish a nice trip and enjoy Nepal.

    Hello ScubaQ,

I just saw your post here and I want to tell you some words if you do not mind and I want to inform you that I have been to Nepal 2 times.

To do annapurna trekking you need to have at least 16 days and in maximum 30 days if you want to join Annapurna Base Camp Trekking too. I did whole Annapurna Circuit trekking in 21 days. I had my wife with me. We hired a guide named Upendra from Kathmandu and 1 porter for carrying our luggage. If you contact him may be he knows more than I know because he walks always on that beautiful trail. The guide was best and I really appreciate his style, help, courage and skill. I think the best idea is to contact him to know in detail.

If you like to contact him then you can ask me for his email address / cell phone. I think he won%26#39;t hesitate to provide you information.

Take care and best of luck for your trekking.

    Recommendation: Trekking Guide in Nepal

I went back to Nepal for the second time in December 2008 for trekking and to experience the great hospitality of Nepali people as well as experience the simple living in the mountain. My friend in Thailand recommended me to contact Babu, so I had trekked with him. I was really satisfied with this service and his expertise in trekking. And everything was well organized. If you are thinking to have trekking in Nepal, I would like to recommend him. He will make you the best holiday. Here is his website:

    Traveling alone to Nepal

I am planning to go to Nepal before my time in Tibet, this will happen in July. I want to know if it safe or dangerous to travel around Kathmandu alone and as a female?

Or do you recommend touring with a tour group? If you do suggest that, what are some good tour groups I should look into?

I would like to go on a 10-day Everest tour and explore Kathmandu.

    Thank you!

    A

    Traveling alone to Nepal

i think the time will be wonderful ...you would be in the period...when so called bad people maoist will be running this country...i guess you never have to worry about that being a female and alone....cause you will be going for 10 days tour in everest you gotta meet in lots of people on the way.. cause i am a resident of kathmandu ..i think you will enjoy kathamndu ..... as much as we do.....so happy holidays best reagards.....see you in nepal...

    Traveling alone to Nepal

Hello - I am a single white female (!!) and I travelled around nepal alot whilst I was living there. I never felt threatened or lonely. It is one of the safest and friendliest countries I%26#39;ve been to.

If you stay in Thamel you will meet other travellers that you can travel with.

    Don%26#39;t worry go for it!1

I just returned from Nepal. I am a female and I travelled alone. I did the Everest Base Camp trek and spent about 5 days in Nepal on my own.

I was a bit nervous at first in Kathmandu as I did get a lot of stares, but I eventually just got used to it and felt very comfortable. Nobody approached me aggressively or in a negative way. The Nepali people are lovely and kind so you should have no problems!! I hired a great guide for about 3 days (Prakash Aryal - prakash_aryalb@yahoo.com) and saw so many things in Kathmandu with him. I hired him simply for the sake of getting around quicker as I had so little time there and there was so much to see :)!

If you are walking around Thamel by yourself it%26#39;s a bit nervewracking, but that really has nothing to do with being female - it%26#39;s that everyone wants to sell you something - all tourists go through that :)!

In the Everest Region I felt incredibly safe. They are so used to tourists up there that a female on here own is really nothing out of the extraordinary. The Sherpa families were wonderful and always smiling.

My trip to Nepal was incredible and I hope to go back someday!

    Hello A,

Definately, you can do alone by yours but if you have first timer, better you will take tour operators.

If you willing to do alone you can use some guide book, this will be useful for you.

This link wil helpful for your to querry of your curisity, http://www.omegatreks.com

    best of luck.

normally it is quite safe to travel around Kathmandu alone, even for females. You can also reduce risk of being hassled by dressing conservatively (ie no shorts, singlet tops etc) even tho it could be hot in July.

On your 10 day Everest trek, i recommend going with a guide or joining up with a group (which should be very easy to do); this is safer in case of accident/sickness while trekking and on rare occasions lone trekkers have been assaulted.

visit to kathmandu march april 2009

am about to leave for kathmandu this week, am looking for a walking pole and backpack where is good lplace to go in thamel and about how much to pay. am going on ghorapani ghandrung trek. from pokhara next week, how far do you walk each day and what is the accomodation and food likel.

  • Electricity situation

Does anyone know when the electricity blackouts are supposed to end? We are headed to Nepal in July 2009 to do some nonprofit work and whether or not we have electricity will impact how we put together our presentations. Thanks!

    Electricity situation

Nepal%26#39;s black out is here to stay for some foreseeable future, at least another five years. However, this problem exists for around half of the year when there is less water flowing in the rivers. There will be a breathing space between mid June to mid November when there is significantly more water flowing in the river - during and immediately after the monsoon season. So, the black out situation won%26#39;t be as bad as it is at the moment. However, we may see some blackouts of an hour or two, especially during the nights on these times.

Baghmara Resort or Hotel Parkside in Chitwan?

Has anyone stayed at the Baghmara Resort or Hotel Parkside in Chitwan? We are going in July and trying to decide where to stay. Thanks!

Baghmara Resort or Hotel Parkside in Chitwan?

we just got back from nepal last week our second time - we love it we stayed out park this time in Rhino Lodge %26amp; Hotel (they all have very similar names to confuse you ) we much enjoyed this time as the lodge is in the center of Sauaha Village - with a little row of shops to wander and even hire bikes which was fun - they do a programme of elephant safari and elephant bathing very close to the elephant breeding centre - we got the bus there and its a fun 6 hour drive - drop us a line if you wanna know more

  • looking for a guide ?

    Hello

This is letter of recommendation for BALKRISHNA TAMANG who served as our guide on a 15 day trek in the Annapurna region. We found him to be a really first-rate guide, caring and protective, very versatile, friendly and Cheerful, knowledgeable about the area with a good command of English. He has worked at all levels of trekking including that of cook, as we learned to our pleasure one evening at a lodge when BAL offered to cook us dinner: he produced the best meal of our trek ! His gregariousness and friendly relations with the Nepalis we met was a bonus in drawing us into Nepali life. His skill as a guide most come out one day when we left the trail without consulting him. He had to rescue us from a most difficult situation checking out steps in a cliff side, guiding us across a turbulent river. We shall always be grateful for his skills on this harrowing day and for his excellent job on the entire trek. His address is balpub80@hotmail.com

Janai Purnima : exact date for 2009 in Patan ?

We would like to attend the Janai Purnima festival at the Kumbeshwar temple in Patan in August 2009.

As we will be going to Patan only 1 day, we would like to attend this festival.

I tried to find out the exact date of this festival and found some sites refuring to 5th of August 2009, others 6th of August 2009.

Does anyone know for sure if it is on the 5th of August 2009 or the 6th of August 2009 in Patan ?

    Thanks for the help !

Janai Purnima : exact date for 2009 in Patan ?

It is 5th of August. I looked at the recently published calendar for the coming new year in Bikram Sambat era, and the festival is on the 5th.

On the 6th, there is also another festival - Gai Jatra - celebrated in the Kathmandu valley .

The link below might help you to find information about festivals celebrated in Nepal.

    http://exoticbuddha.com/calendar/

Janai Purnima : exact date for 2009 in Patan ?

    Thanks for the info !

I looked on the web to see the dates of full moon, because Janai Prunima is held on full moon day.

On the web I found August 6 2009 being a full moon day, so I presumed it would be on August 6 2009.

I know that the festival of Gai Jatra (The Cow Festival) is held the day after.

As we are still in Kathmandu on that date, any suggestion were we could go to in Kathmandu to best see the Gai Jatra ?

Tips for hiking to Everest Base Camp

    - Get some strong SPF sunscreen as the sun is very strong when up in the mountains. Try to get at least 50+. I used 30+ and it wasnt enough to stop me getting badly burnt on my nose and hands. When we trekked it was cloudy but high up in the mountains, the sun is very strong.

    - Take a supply of diamox with you. Medical opinion is divided about using Diamox as it can hide the effects of altitude mountain sickness. It worked for myself and my husband though. Seek some advice on this. It can make your chin and cheeks numb as well as give you pins and needles in your legs and fingers.

    - Again medical opinion is divided on the use of ibuprofen/nurofen and paracetamol regarding altitude headaches. Doctors/guides and other trekkers told us different things. We used both paracetamol and Ibuprofen on 2 occasions and it helped. Again seek some advice on this.

    - Try and stay awake during the day, dont go to sleep as this makes altitude sickness worse. As much as you dont feel like taking the day hikes DO THEM! - they help so much with acclimatisation

    - If you stay in teahouses - beware they are FREEZING!!! even in summer. It is the Himalaya region after all. I slept in as many layers as I could including beanie/gaiter/fleece/leggings and tracksuit pants and I felt fine.

    - Bring good gear - basic thermal layer, fleece and gortex jacket, beanie, gaiter, gloves and walking poles. Good hiking socks are a must, especially at night when it is cold.

    - Bring alot of snacks - lollies/mars bars/muesli bars etc etc

    - Drink plenty of fluids - again medical opinion is divided on this. I tried to have about 4L/day at high altitude and this helped a lot with headaches

    - Bringing a hot water bottle is an excellent idea and take it to bed with you and use it for cold spots!

    - Water is very expensive the higher you go. Try and purify your water with tablets. You can get them from the pharmacy in Kathmandu or at home before you go.

    - We were not approached by Maoists at all during our trek and we trekked base camp during the election period in Nepal (April 2008)

    - We were able to change 1000 rupee notes with no problem at all.

Tips for hiking to Everest Base Camp

    re:cold.

Just bring along the best goose down sleeping bag you can get- a minus 20 test if possible.

Tips for hiking to Everest Base Camp

Can you give some insight as to the difficulty of the trek itself as compared to the Inca Trail, Kilimanjaro, or Aconcagua? Thanks! Much appreciated.

I%26#39;ve never been to any of those other places.

If you take a practice trek and walk for five miles with a thirty pound pack on your back without major problems, and climb a few hills in the process, you should do just fine.

Trekking the inca trail is quite intense and strenuous. The trail is bascially up and down for 4 days with days lasting 9 hours, 7 hours, 6 hours and 3 hours consecutively. Heading down is steep, slippery and very hard work. Not good for the knees!

Everest is not hard trekking at all - there are many flat sections, some high passes and a bit of steep terrain but nothing in comparison to inca trail....it all comes down to altitude when you trek to EBC. It is hard to breathe as the oxygen levels drop to 50% less than at sea level. The tree line disappears at 4000m above sea level and you reallt notice the difference.

Altitude does not affect everyone. You never know what is going to happen until you get there.

    bring baby wipes

i thought base camp trek was way harder than inca trail

base camp is doable for anyone, but its not easy

    All

Myself and a few friends want to do both everest base camp and inca trail.

Can anyone give me information on both with respect to....

What operators to use and expected cost? i think we intend to take around 17days (ish) for each trip

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    cheers!

  • drinking water in nepal

we will be staying in Kathmandu three days before our trek begins. I%26#39;m concerned about the drinking water. How do you get good water in khatmandu?

    drinking water in nepal

We bought bottled water which is for sale everywhere and had no problem with it at all.

    drinking water in nepal

    Bottled water %26amp; Everest Beer!

I have been a tour guide in Nepal for 8 years. I can tell you that most of the local people here can drink the tap water, but I wouldn%26#39;t advise it for foreigners and tourists. Many of my clients have tried to do this and felt sick for a short time afterward. There are two options for drinking water in Nepal for the tourist. One, you can buy bottled water at any store for about 20 rupies (The price goes up when you are treking and while on trek you will pay between 80 to 100 rupies depending on the location and as I have seen as much as 300 rupes at Everest Base Camp). The second option is to buy tablets (iodine) or liquid drops which desolve in the water and filter it. These can cost between 60 and 200 rupies and one bottle will last an entire trek. I would recommend buying bottled water if you can afford it at each location because the tabelts and liquids that purify the water have a slightly unplesent taste. As of this writing 80 rupies is equal to 1 USD.

    annapurna weather in may?

hi - very tempted to do annapurna circuit in second half of may but am wondering if it might be too hot, humid, rainy, and/or dusty? not sure how to read climate estimates because of changing altitude. i understand sept-nov is the best time, followed by feb-mar+. just wondering if may would be worth it. thanks!

    annapurna weather in may?

May has quite hot and humid climate. The monsoon generally starts from mid June. Hope this link helps you to understand the climate pattern of different locations. exoticbuddha.com/english/wp-content/uploads/…

Look for the temperature of Pokhara Airport and in general you can expect the temperature of the trekking route to be some degress less than that of Pokhara.

    Visiting this October

I%26#39;m doing a seven night trip with Cox %26amp; Kings this October, visiting Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara - has anyone else done this? Any advice about these three regions would be great, thanks - also, there%26#39;s an option to take a flight over Everest - I%26#39;d be interested in any recommendations as to the best company to use.

    Many thanks!

    Visiting this October

    Llamafarm:

We took the Everest Flight in 2004 and would recommended it. Since you are traveling in October the weather has a good chance of being clear. There are several airlines that offer the trip. We used Bhudda Air and they were fine. The flights leave early each morning . Your hotel or guide can make the arrangements.

Thanks very much for this - I%26#39;ve heard of Buddha Air, and they do seem to have a good reputation. Any other bits of advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • currency in Nepal

we have been told that we can only get Nepalese currency after we arrive in Nepal. We are arriving at the Kathmandu airport at 10pm at night. Will this create any difficulties getting Nepalese rupees and if so can anyone offer some suggestions on how to get around this potential problem... or is it not an issue!!

thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    currency in Nepal

There is exchange counter at the airport and I think they open during the night time as well. If that is not open, then you can draw some money in Nepalese currency from the ATM at the airport. If that is not operational, then since you are coming at night, you might not need much money until the next morning. Have some loose change in dollar, Euro, pound sterling or other widely used currencies for the taxi service to your hotel, if nobody is coming to pick you up.

Once you reach the hotel, ask where the money exchange is or you can ask them to change the money for you. You might get better rates this way than exchanging money at the airport.

    Dear fabio,

HI and how are you? 5 people is enough to one group.you don%26#39;t need to group .you can start tour with your plan and desire. if you would like to look Everest you have a option to do Lhasa Everest BC tour.but it take more day then you time.

    Bichar

    Hi,

    I did that trip twice.

You can make the Kathmandu -Lhasa trip in 5 days.

Usually is 7 nights and 8 days (All the tour operator

doing the same trip.) Trips leaving On Thuesdays and Saturdays because the connection with the flight back from Lhasa to Kathmandu(2 flights a week)

I recommend to book the Lhasa overland tour ahead because the embassy is open only 1 or 2 hours daily and sometimes closed. If you send a photocopy of your passport they can start to apply for the TTB(tibet permit) for you. And when you arrive takes only 1 day to get the permit otherwise if you just start to apply for permit when you arriving it will take 4-5 days

Here is an agency www.himalayanabode.com Nabin is a very nice guy. I did all my trekking and my Lhasa trip with them Try to contact with the agency they will help you.

Good luck and have a nice trip!

weather in jun july for everest bast camp trek

    Hi,

I am considering an everest base camp trek from either Jiri or Lukla starting approx June 20, or the August 7th.

Anybody have any reports on what the weather is like and if june/july is better than August.

Is there too many clouds to really make it worth your while going then,

Whats a typical rain pattern for a few days or a week and how does it affect your trekking

    thanks

    derek

weather in jun july for everest bast camp trek

Late June to mid September is the rainy season in Nepal and it rains quite a lot during this time. But it does not mean that it rains all the time. The rain pattern are very uncertain. Sometimes, it might not rain for quite some days while at other times, it might rain continuously for some days. It might rain in the afternoon, evenings and any time of the day.

If you are lucky, then the clouds and rain might not bother you. If you do go for trekking during this time, be prepared against the rain and leech that will bother you on your trekking.

    Overland from Kathmandu to Tibet

    Hi all,

Any budget way to go from Kathmandu to Lhasa Overland?I%26#39;ll could get the regular china visa done but how about the Tibet permit? Please advise.

    Overland from Kathmandu to Tibet

It is tough. And constantly changing.

Your best strategy is to sign up for a cheap few-day tour that will take you from Kathmandu to Lhasa overland. Then apply for a Chinese visa in your home country (NOT in Kathmandu) and show them proof that you are on a tour. That *should* give you a Chinese visa endorsed for Tibet.

Then, you can either take the tour to Lhasa and head out on your own from there. Or cancel the tour and go overland on your own.

    Hope that helps.

    Overland from Kathmandu to Tibet

I found this guy%26#39;s blog/site really informative on the process:

    thelongestwayhome.com/resources/How-to-trave…

    Hi,

You need to join one of the travel agency, they will provide you Tibet permit and also visa.

Without travel agency you can%26#39;t get Tibet permit and visa.

    Cheers

According to other travelers advise, you should NOT get a chinese visa in your home country before arriving in Kathmandu. It will be invalidated upon receipt of your group visa (assuming you are getting in to Tibet with a group). No refund on the $$$ for you original visa.

Yes, we have heard similar information...also, be aware that the hours for the office that actually issues the visa stamp are very limited, and sometimes the office is open just one day/per week. Be sure to check the current hours, once you are there! It seems the working hours change like the wind!

    Hi guys,

Me and my girlfriend are planning on doing the trip from Kathmandu to Tibet in May. Assuming there are no problems and we%26#39;re allowed in, from what I read we should be granted permits no probs, as long as we%26#39;re booked on a tour.

The only issue I have is that we are working in China afterwards and have invitation letters to apply for Chinese visas already. We ideally need to be applying soon but if the Visa is going to get voided as soon as we travel across the Nepal/Tibet border I don%26#39;t want to get it until we are in China. Can anyone say definitively if we MUST use this group visa issued in Kathmandu or if you can use a Chinese visa obtained in the UK? I%26#39;ve also read on other forums that you can cross the border with a normal china visa as long as you have the relevant tibet permits.

Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who can help :)

    Jungle Safari from Kathmandu

I won%26#39;t have much time in Nepal. In fact, at best it will be 2 nights. Is it possible to stay in the city and take a wildlife tour from there?

    Jungle Safari from Kathmandu

    Hello Currie,

If you have just 2nights in nepal then better to avoid the trip to wild life tour because to have nice and wonderful view of the animals you should drive from kathmandu to the southern west nepal call Chitwan National park which takes minimum 5 hours by bus or if you take an optional trip by plane then takes only 20 minutes by small air craft which take off from the kathmandu domestic terminal close to the international airport.

So, if you can make it by plane then go ahead or if not spend your memorable time in Kathmandu valley and overnight at the nagarkot to have nice view of the himalaya ranges. Nagarkot is wonderful hill station which located at 35km east from kathmandu.

Please ask here for further assistance..

    cheers

    Jungle Safari from Kathmandu

As has been mentioned in the previous post, you might not have a memorable experience if you have just two nights to stay in Nepal. Besides, if there are delays on the way (both land and air), there are chances that you might miss you plane.

    Best Way to get there

    Hi,

I am traveling aound South East Asia on a budget and I am researching the best way to get there for end of March

Is it better to go to India and go over or shall i fly to katmandu.

  • Should I go to Pokhara or Kathmandu first for preparing for

I%26#39;m visiting Nepal for 2 weeks (from Varanasi in India by land), and am wondering if I should visit Pokhara or Kathmandu first. I%26#39;d like to do a short (up to 6 days) trek around Himalaya, and the ideal place for it seems to be around Pokhara. However, I%26#39;d like to join a group through a travel agency (since I%26#39;m traveling by myself, and the security seems an issue in some of the treks), but there seem a lot more agencies in Kathmandu than in Pokhara (according to Lonely Planet). I also need to rent or purchase some hiking gears (such as a sleeping bag), and there seem more gear stores in Kathmandu than in Pokhara (again according to Lonely Planet).

Do you think I should visit Kathmandu first to organize myself for a trek before going to Pokhara? From the Indian border from Varanasi, Pokhara seems a lot closer than Kathmandu. Also preferably I%26#39;d like to get the trek over with before doing a sightseeing in Kathmandu.

    Thanks for the advice

Should I go to Pokhara or Kathmandu first for preparing for

Sorry the title should%26#39;ve read ';Should I go to Pokhara or Kathmandu first for preparing for a short trek?'; It was truncated somehow.

Should I go to Pokhara or Kathmandu first for preparing for

As you have mentioned yourself, there are more options in Kathmandu compared to what is available in Pokhara. However, there are plenty of choices in Pokhara as well. So, you might not worry about getting the items that you require in Pokhara. If you want to do the sightseeing after the trekking, I would suggest you visit Pokhara first and then head to Kathmandu from there. Although Kathmandu seems far from Sunauli (I suppose you are entering Nepal from there) than Pokhara, the time taken to reach both places on bus is almost the same.

    Hi thirdman,

I did a similar trip to what your planning, mainly for the same reasons.

Try to get into Gorakphur very early in the morning, there%26#39;s a train that leaves varanasi at about midnight, but it%26#39;s often delayed for hours. Take a jeep to sunali 100rps, there are buses too, but they are slower.

take a cycle rickshaw to cross the border.

There are then plenty of local buses headed in both directions and as previously mentioned they both take the same about of time.

I went to Pokhara. There are plenty or agencies in Pokhara to arrange short, medium or long treks, so ignore your lonely planet on that one.

Yes there are more in KTM, but there%26#39;s more than enough in Pokhara, and you can arrange for a trek a day beforehand if need be.

It%26#39;s then a 5 hour + bus ride to KTM.

You might fine some more help %26amp; info at http://www.thelongestwayhome.com including an article on who to hire a guide in Nepal.

Hope this helps and all the best

    Tea House Trek

We%26#39;re planning on doing a tea house trek to Poon Hill for five days at the end of March beginning of April. I was wondering what to expect when staying at a tea house, ie bedding arrangements (dorms / rooms), and whether we need to take a sleeping bag, towels etc. What clothing would we need as well for that time of year.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Sam

    Tea House Trek

Most tea houses will have twin rooms - basic, but normally clean, as well as a dormitory-style room. Beds will ghave a mattress, and normally a pillow, sometimes a blanket. The best bet is to take your own sleeping bag, and towel!

Days should be pleasantly warm at that time of year, but venings may be a chilly. A down jacket (which also serves as an additional pillow) is useful, but not essential, a good fleece jacket would be sufficient (and normally the stove in the lodge dining room will be lit !)

    Tea House Trek

Many thanks - that%26#39;s useful... I understand we can hire down jackets if necessary in Pokhara??

We%26#39;ll do that same trek in the same period. Will you be in a group? Or individual? We will start 26th of march and end 30th of march. We%26#39;re in an international group.

We%26#39;re not getting to Nepal until the 25th and then we%26#39;re doing the trek with a guide from the 30th March - 3rd April. I think we%26#39;re doing it on our own (myself and my partner).... Enjoy!!

Great! Enjoy :) I hope we will all be okay!

Yes - you can hire down jackets in KTM, and I imagine you can in Pokhara.

    SamKirk9

WOW! Sounds a bit like MY schedule.

I leave for Nepal 25 March.

But I fly up to Jomsom on 29 March to start trekking ';backward';, i.e. down to near Pokhara. 5-day trek.

My travel agency thought it wouldn%26#39;t be a bad idea to have a down jacket that time of year, since it might get cool at night. He%26#39;s actually loaning me one!!! Beats toting it around on several flights!

Can anyone explain what a down jacket is??? :)

This may help explain the Down Jacket:

    altrec.com/the-north-face/nuptse-down-jacket…

    Hello Samkirk,

I am really pleased to inform you some words about trekking in Ghorepani / Poon Hill; the best trekking route in the world.

On the trek you can get rooms with single and double bed and as the time you said the season is the most busy season along the trail so that if you are alone and if you do not have any guide porter then you may not be able to get rooms in the lodges.

If you can afford then its better to have sleeping bag and towel with a down jacket (Water and wind proof jacket.

Take care and best of luck.

Everest Base Camp - Gap Adventures

Has anyone out there used Gap Adventures for the Everest Base Camp Trek? My wife and I are planning on going with Gap in mid April. Any information on the trek or on how Gap did would be appriciated.

We can%26#39;t get to Katmandu until (noonish Sunday) the day before we are scheduled to head out to Lukla, will this be a problem getting the supplies we need? Should we buy or rent heavy jeckets? Our big worry is luggage arriving as we are travelling from Canada via London, Bangkok then Katmandu.

We are in good shape, a little older then most trekkers I think, 58 and 61.

    Comments, sugestions Thanks

Everest Base Camp - Gap Adventures

    Hello Charlotte,

I am so much happy to reply about your forum message and I want to ask you one question that can you tell me that the company GAP Adventures is company from Nepal or from your country?

If you book your trip from the companies from your company it costs a lot than you need to pay and if you book with local travel agent of Nepal, it comes less than 50% so that be careful about it.

  • Cheap trekking in Nepal

what is the best way to go about hiring a guide/porter for the Annapurna circuit to minimize cost and hassle and just do it once I fly into Kathmandu. Are there bulletin boards you can check out somewhere? How do you know a good service from a bad one?

    Cheap trekking in Nepal

I did the Annapurna Circuit 4 years ago. I did NOT want to hire someone in KTM or Pokhara - I decided to get by bus from KTM and walk a couple of easy days into the valley from Besisahar, the start of the trail. I then asked for a porter at the teahouse I stayed in on my second night. The guy was great, a local carpenter but the tourist dollar really means a lot there. I felt I was directly paying to help a local family. There will be no difficulty in finding someone to guide or act as a porter - it took me an hour to find someone and agree a daily rate. If things don%26#39;t work out with you - eg if he tries to go too fast, tries to take control too much - you at least have the chance of changing to someone more suitable. Abve all, you will get a better sense of achievement, will get more fun by trekking at your own pace. The mainthing is to check that he has the right gear - good boots, anorak, warm clothes for cold weather at high altitude.

It cost me about $6 per day, and he paid for his own food and lodging. At that sort of price, it was easy at the end to give him a good tip plus a fair bit of clothing/gloves etc

    Cheap trekking in Nepal

    Hello there,

    How are you doing?

I am sorry for me late reply about your concern but I want to tell you some words from my side as I am one of the experienced guide of Nepal.

You can hire porters out from the trekking companies too but if you hire directly from your side and if any emergency event happen like injury of porter or guide, death or any others then you might be in trouble so its better to hire a porter/ guide from a company where they have their insurance.

Do not go in cheap way but go in cheap and secure way too.
